How to prepare your kids for an outdoor photo session
I know it might feel daunting planning and doing a photo session when you have little ones (and even more if it takes place outdoors), but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming! With a little planning and some thoughtful preparation, you can make the experience enjoyable and stress-free for everyone. And the icing on the cake? You'll treasure a heartwarming family keepsake that celebrates the love, laughter, and one-of-a-kind bond you share!
So here’s how to ensure your kiddos are ready for the spotlight:
Talk it up in advance: I believe this is the most important point. Every time we have to take our daughter to the doctor, an event or somewhere I know she might find scary, we talk about it with her in advance, and so far, it has worked like a charm. You can even play a game of “who takes the best photo” so you can all practice being comfortable in front of the camera.
Involve them in the planning: Let them help select outfits or pick a special toy to bring along. Making them feel included will boost their excitement!
Dress Comfortably: Choose outfits they love and feel good wearing. If they’re uncomfortable, it might show in the photos. Also, wearing layers will help us have colour options and if you guys are cold or hot during the session, it’s an easy fix.
Snack and Play Essentials: Pack non-messy snacks and water. These can be lifesavers for keeping spirits high and little hands occupied during breaks.
Arrive early: Getting to the location 15 to 20 min earlier will allow your little ones to get acclimated with the location and will give us time to get to know each other. Trust me, this little detail goes a long way!
Embrace imperfection: Remember, life with kids is wonderfully chaotic! Embrace the silly faces, goofy antics, and unpredictable moments—these authentic snapshots are the stuff of family legends.
Keep it positive: Encourage and praise your kids throughout the session (but keep it low-pressure). Positive vibes go a long way in making the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Celebrate After: End the day with a treat or family activity. It’s a great way to make the session feel special.
