What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot in Montreal
Because coordinating outfits shouldn't require a group therapy session.
Hey there, fabulous families! Planning a family photoshoot? First off, kudos to you for convincing everyone—no small feat! Now, let's talk outfits. The goal? To capture your family's unique vibe while ensuring everyone feels comfortable and looks their best. Here's your go-to guide to dressing for success (and natural smiles) in your upcoming session.
1. Mom, this is your time to shine!
Moms, pick your outfit first, something that makes you feel amazing. Once you've chosen your ensemble, coordinate the rest of the family's outfits around your look to ensure a harmonious overall appearance. If you still don’t know which colours suit you best and make you shine, I strongly recommend you give THIS blog article a read, where I break down Color Analysis and its power!
2. Coordinate, Don't Match: Start with a Color Palette
Gone are the days of identical outfits (looking at you, white shirts and jeans). Instead, opt for a cohesive colour palette. Pick 2–3 main colors and maybe a soft accent. Neutrals (cream, beige, soft gray, dusty blue, blush) are timeless, but you can add a pop of color (rust, mustard, olive) for personality. The trick is to coordinate, not match. We’re aiming for harmony, not a “matching T-shirts at Disney” moment.
3. Comfort Meets Style: Be Yourselves
Your family's outfits should reflect who you are. If your daughter hates dresses or your son really can’t stand button-downs, don't force it. Embrace your family's style, be it sporty, casual, or a mix of both. The key is to look polished without compromising comfort.
4. Avoid Neon and Logos
Big logos, neon colors, or busy patterns can steal the spotlight. Small, subtle prints? Totally fine. But let’s keep the attention on your family’s smiles and snuggles, not the giant cartoon character on a T-shirt.
5. Fit is It
Ensure everyone's clothing fits well. Oversized or too-tight outfits can be unflattering and uncomfortable. Remember, confidence shines through when everyone feels good in what they're wearing.
6. Think in Textures and Layers
Layers add visual interest and allow for quick adjustments during the shoot. Think cardigans, vests, scarves, or jackets. They're especially handy for outdoor sessions where the weather can be unpredictable. Textures (lace, knits, linen) photograph beautifully and give a cozy, authentic feel. Just avoid super shiny fabrics (they can reflect light in funny ways).
7. Dress for the Location and Season
If we’re shooting in a park full of fall leaves, rich earthy tones will look gorgeous. Beach session? Soft pastels and flowy fabrics work like magic. Indoors? Light, neutral tones will keep the focus on connection. Keep in mind to not use the same colour of your surroundings, we want you guys to be the stars of the show not to blend in!
8. Mind the Details: Shoes and Accessories
Shoes matter! Opt for clean, coordinated footwear that complements your outfits (and when in doubt, naked feet makes for a beautiful and more natural photo session). Accessories like necklaces, headbands, or subtle jewelry can enhance your look, but avoid anything too flashy that might steal the spotlight like caps or big watches.
9. This one’s for dad
Please please please, keep your pockets empty, it will make editing way easier!
10. Plan Ahead, But Keep It Relaxed
Lay out outfits a few days before, and see how they look together. Snap a quick photo on your phone, it’s the easiest way to see if the colors and textures flow. And remember: the goal isn’t perfection, it’s connection. A genuine laugh, a toddler snuggle, or your partner holding your hand will always shine brighter than the perfect outfit.
