How to Have a Stress-Free Family Photoshoot (Yes, It Is Possible!)
Because family photos should be fun—not fuel for your next therapy session.
As a family photographer and a mom myself, I know the importance of capturing your little ones’ lives. You don’t want to miss a thing, and time flies am I right? Nowadays we have so many things on our plates. Mental lists, extra-curricular activities, playdates, the house chores, I mean WE. ARE. BUSY! So sometimes we just forget to stop for a second and just snap a photo. That's why family photo sessions are so important - they give us a chance to pause, come together, and create lasting memories.
However, I also know how much thought, effort, and maybe even bribery goes into getting everyone photo-ready. The idea of wrangling kids, coordinating outfits, and smiling through it all might already feel like a lot.
But I promise you this: with just a little preparation, your family session can actually be fun, relaxed, and full of the genuine connection you want to capture. I’ve got all the tips you need to make that magic happen.
Here we go 👇🏼
📸 Let Go of Perfection
Repeat after me: it does not have to be perfect.
The beauty of family photography lies in the real moments—the hugs, the laughter, the messiness of life with little ones. It’s okay if someone forgets to smile or your toddler decides this is the perfect time for a meltdown (I know a thing or two about these). I’ll guide you the entire time, so you can focus on being present with your crew. Some of the best photos come from those unplanned, candid moments.
🎨 Choose Comfort Over “Perfect” Outfits
Yes, coordinating looks great in photos—but comfort is key. Choose clothes that feel good, allow movement (especially for kids), and reflect your family’s vibe. Stick to a complementary colour palette with soft, earthy or neutral tones, and avoid anything too matchy-matchy or with bold logos (also any neon colours, busy patterns or graphic tees). This adds visual interest to your photos while still maintaining a cohesive look.
And if you’re feeling unsure, don’t worry—I created THIS blog to help guide you through this process that sometimes can seem daunting. And if you are still not fully confident, you can either hit Pinterest or shoot me an email and I’ll gladly help you!
🕒 Plan Around Your Kids’ Schedules
This one’s important: timing can make or break the session. Schedule your session when your little ones are usually most content. If you’re family is the morning type, a relaxed morning session at the comfort of your own home would be perfect for you. If you love nature, running and the open air, then a golden hour photoshoot at a beautiful outdoor location is your go to choice.
Also, if you really love golden hour photo sessions, don’t you worry about your kids going to bed a little bit later, one day out of 365 won’t kill them (and trust me, it will be worth it😉).
💬 Prepare your kids
This is a huge one! Me and my husband now know that when we prepare our kid for any situation and let her know what’s about to happen, the outcome –most of the times– is a success! So talk to your little ones about what to expect during the photoshoot and emphasize that it's going to be a fun adventure!
🧺 Bring Snacks, Wipes, and a Backup Outfit
A few things you’ll definitely want to pack:
Non-messy snacks (think Cheerios, puffs, crackers)
Water bottles
Baby wipes (always)
A backup outfit for each kid (just in case)
A small toy or comfort item
These small extras can be lifesavers if someone’s feeling cranky or if there’s a last-minute spill.
💖 Focus on Connection, Not Posing
Don’t worry about where to put your hands or if everyone is looking at the camera—better if they don’t. My sessions are relaxed and playful. We’ll play games, move around, and capture the little in-between moments you’ll want to remember forever.
The best images come when you’re simply enjoying your people.
☀️ Trust the Process
I know it can be a little nerve-wracking, especially if things don’t go exactly as planned. But I promise I’m here for you—to guide, support, and help you feel relaxed throughout the session. Trust the process, trust your beautiful chaos, and trust that we’ll create something truly special together.
✨ Final Thoughts
A family session is not just about taking pretty pictures—it’s about capturing the love, energy, and connection that defines your family in this season of life. Let go of the pressure, come as you are, and let me do the rest.
You’ve got this—and I’ve got you.
