Top 10 Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session
As a family photographer and a mom myself, I know the importance of capturing your little ones’ lives. You don’t want to miss a thing, and time flies am I right? Nowadays we have so many things on our plates. Mental lists, extra-curricular activities, playdates, fun activities to plan so the kids can drain their energy properly, I mean WE. ARE. BUSY! So sometimes we just forget to stop for a second and just snap a photo. That's why family photo sessions are so important - they give us a chance to pause, come together, and create lasting memories.
However, I also know that planning a photo session can be stressful. All the planning and getting everybody ready, not knowing what to expect, etc. I know mamma, it is a lot. That's why I've put together my top 10 tips to help you have a stress-free experience and ensure that your session is enjoyable, memorable, and results in stunning photos that you'll cherish for years to come and want to actually showcase around your home!
Plan Ahead: Start by scheduling your session well in advance to avoid any last-minute rush. This allows ample time for selecting the perfect location, coordinating outfits, and making any necessary arrangements.
Choose the Right Time: Opt for a time of day when your family is typically at their best. Whether it's the golden hour before sunset at a beautiful outdoor location or a relaxed morning session at the comfort of your own home. Pick a time that suits your family's schedule and energy levels.
Coordinate Outfits, Don't Match: Instead of everyone wearing the exact same outfit, aim for coordinating colors and styles that complement each other. This adds visual interest to your photos while still maintaining a cohesive look. Also, a cool tip is to choose a colour palette that complements your home decor, where you'll likely display your photos. I created THIS blog to help guide you through this process that sometimes can seem daunting.
Prepare your kids: This is a huge one! Me and my husband now know that when we prepare our kid for any situation and let her know what’s about to happen, the outcome -most of the times- is a success! So talk to your little ones about what to expect during the photoshoot and emphasize that it's going to be a fun adventure!
Bring snacks and a favourite toy: Having some snacks and a favorite toy on hand can help keep your children happy and engaged during the session. Make sure to choose non-messy snacks to avoid any outfit mishaps! BUT, be ready if any mess happens. Bringing extra clothes (just in case) won’t hurt and will keep the stress away.
Arrive early to your session location: If you’re doing an outdoor session, give yourself plenty of time to arrive, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area. This extra time can help you relax, gather your thoughts, and ensure that everyone is ready to go when the photographer is set to begin.
Trust Your Photographer: You've chosen your photographer for a reason – because you love her style and vision! Trust her expertise and let her guide you through the session. She’ll know how to capture your family's best angles and moments. Also, I will get close and touch arms or shoulders if I see that I need to help you with a certain pose. I'm a hugger so I’m comfortable with touching, but please let me know if you are not!
Be flexible and embrace the unexpected: Family photo sessions can be unpredictable, especially when young children are involved. Embrace the unexpected moments and remember that these candid shots often become the most cherished memories.
Relax and Have Fun: Take a deep breath and relax! Remember, this is a time to celebrate your family and create lasting memories together. So, laugh, play, and enjoy each other's company – the best photos often happen when you're simply being yourselves.
Celebrate Afterwards: Once the session is over, take some time to celebrate! Whether it's with a family dinner, a movie night, or simply cuddling up together at home. Cherish the memories you've made and look forward to seeing the beautiful moments captured by your photographer.
Can't wait to capture your family and all its true essence!
